Iconic Image of Johnny Cash

This morning I was listening to Johnny Cash’s song, and it reminded of this image. I got inspired to write about it.

This image is inarguably one of the most iconic (and most imitated) in western pop culture. Johnny Cash, flipping the bird at San Quentin Prison in 1969. Many are unaware that the photo came about after photographer Jim Marshall asked Cash during the soundcheck to pose for the warden of the prison. The Man in Black made his feelings known and the image, that interesting, became legendary.

It is safe to say that Johnny Cash wasn’t the biggest fan of San Quentin Prison.
