It fits the bill of having operated as a university (in the modern sense of the word) in some capacity since 1088, making it the oldest in continuous operation. Some might argue that the Moroccan University of al-Qarawiyyin, founded in AD 857, should hold the title but it is widely disputed because it is not certain it has always been a university.
